The Massacre of the Innocents is the name given to the biblical account of the murder of all young male children two years of age and under within the vicinity of Bethlehem by King Herod the Great (the Roman-appointed King of the Jews) in a futile attempt to kill the baby Jesus. The incident has been the subject of a number of paintings by numerous artists, though none more graphically portrayed than by Peter Paul Rubens in the early seventeenth century. Rubens\u2019 lurid depiction of a dead baby turned blue is reproduced in this image for its shock value, for the violent murdering of children makes grim but real news. Underneath the dead baby, the lute with a broken string symbolises religious discord and man\u2019s imperfections. The large achromatic and deathly-looking face to the right of the image is taken from a photograph I once took of a sand sculpture on the banks of the River Thames in London - its short existence before being washed away by the tide suggestive of the brief lifespan of the children and also gives the image an ethereal quality. The meat hook in the centre is a reference to the Sandy Hook massacre of 2012 when 20 children were fatally shot whilst at school. The large \u201cplay\u201d button surrounding the hook not only represents the ease of access young people have to violent films and computer games, but is also a suggestion that children should just be allowed to \u201cplay\u201d in the old-fashioned and innocent sense of the word.","metaTitle":"","metaDescription":"Why are the youth of today becoming so desensitised to violence?
